Regardless of your level of comfort with public speaking, there’s always space for growth and improvement. And last week’s Girl Boss Bootcamp: Get Comfortable with Public Speaking was a good place to start and/or continue developing these skills.

Ellevate member and communications coach Madeline Schwarz facilitated an interactive, multi-media workshop focused on helping participants identify what type of speaking personality they have and how to harness that power and speak with impact.

From self-identifying as a vegetable (that’s right — kale, radishes, and beets) to building with Legos, participants in the workshop focused on how to articulate their message and communicate their meaning in a way that clients and teammates can understand. We saw women step out of their comfort zone to stand in front of a room of strangers telling a made-up story (on the fly) about a toy horse — of all things! Using Madeline’s focusing techniques, these stories and experiences women shared grew, and their speaking became stronger in the short time we spent together.

Well after the workshop ended, everyone stuck around to network and practice their new public speaking skills. That’s what happens when you put a group of solid women together — you build connections and grow together!

Everyone left with the reminder to keep their objectives at the forefront of their presentation and to always remember to breathe.

Girl Boss Boot Camp is a series of interactive professional development workshops aimed at equipping young professionals with the knowledge, skills, and support system they need to excel in the workplace. It is hosted by the Young Professionals of Ellevate NYC and focuses on life hacks you can put into action tomorrow and skills-building that will make you shine at work.

The NYC Chapter Young Professionals (YoPros) host monthly events aimed at women 0–5 years into their careers. Our goal is to help young professionals gain confidence, navigate unfamiliar waters, choose a career path, and kick butt at work. We look forward to seeing you at our next events!
