What is Breathwork and Why Should You Find Out?
By: Joanne Vitali
It was all fun and games until I woke up on the bathroom floor.
As I came to, I thought to myself:
Maybe I should have done a little more research before going to this class. I had no idea what I was in for.
The class? Healer Training Levels 1- 5 with David Elliott at Omega in New York. It sounded fun, a combo of something called breathwork with essential oils and crystals. About 30 of us gathered every day and practiced active pranayama meditation, but more importantly, we learned how to help others to breathe and HEAL.
When I arrived, I was feeling down and hopeless from an onslaught of intense family issues over the past several years, culminating as 2020 kicked off. I had learned that my son was addicted to heroin for the past five years. It was a kick to the gut. Devastating.
David asked us to project out three years and imagine. I could not. Instead, I struggled to hold back tears and tried to listen as my classmates shared their dreams. Projecting out three years was much too frightening. So much could happen! So many scary things could happen. My biggest fear was very much in charge of me: If that could happen to my son, what could happen next?

By midweek, emotionally things got even more intense for me, but as David promised, the release came by Wednesday. Apparently, my third chakra cleared, as my more enlightened classmates informed me. My need to sob Tuesday night, passing out Wednesday morning followed by nausea, was all part of the clearing.
Crazily, I was starting to feel better. The weight I had literally felt in my upper chest was…dare I say it…gone? Thinking about the future didn’t feel great yet, but it was possible for me to think how things might be over the next year, if not three.
Since then, with regular practice, my fears have been kept at bay and I’ve got incredible energy. This is a 180 degree turnaround from the pre-breathwork me.
I want to help you heal, too.
So what is breathwork?
It’s a psychedelic trip, dude — without the drugs.
How do you do it? It’s simple, a three part breath.
- Inhale through the belly.
- Inhale through the chest.
- Exhale it all out.
So simple and so profound. The breath increases your oxygen level, disconnecting your mind and getting you into your body. If you’ve ever had trouble meditating, this method is for you.

After just seven or so minutes breathing this way, you enter a deep meditative state where amazing things can happen. Your right brain takes over.
You may communicate with those who have passed. You may hear from your spirit team. You may interact with living family members. Or you may, as I did, talk to fear itself and let it go.
If you tingle from head to toe, that is expected. That’s your energy moving, releasing.
You can feel it for yourself. It’s a visceral, physical, and spiritual experience that will be unique for you.
We hold energy/emotions from upsetting or traumatic events in our lives in our body. Breathwork can release it.
Given what we all have endured recently, we all can benefit from release. It also reduces the acidity of your body, which helps with all kinds of healing.
Mental healing. Physical healing. It’s possible with your breath.
Come join me and experience it for yourself. It’s easy to learn, but life changing.
