With the new year ahead, are you looking to create new habits?

Habits can move us forward or they can hold us back. Regardless, they define who we are. We can turn unhealthy or unproductive habits into healthier or productive ones by mastering the concept of consistency.

Habits are formed by repetition.

If you think about the definition of the word “habit,” you think of something you do out of routine, often subconsciously. You don’t wake up one day with a new habit. You form a habit over time through actions.

Even those habits that hold us back are the result of repeated daily actions, some which you may not be aware of. That’s one of the primary reasons why it’s challenging to break them. …

When you were born, you were immediately thrust into an unknown world.

Everything around you was new and scary. You knew the sound of your mom and dad’s voice, but nothing else. It was all brand new to you.

Despite your fears, you still grew. You learned to smile and laugh. You learned to eat. You learned to speak. You learned to crawl.

Each thing you learned, you had to challenge yourself. You had to step out of the comfort of your mom’s arms to take that first step. You cried a lot. You struggled a lot. Flexing to a new environment, unlearning some of our old habits, all while adjusting to a world of unknowns. One thing I know for sure is that each one of us (and our associates) is on a different journey and that means we need to realize how little control we have in this environment. In the midst of fires, locusts, political wars, murder hornets, and a pandemic, humanity is pushed past its limits and required to isolate to protect each other. Many are lost and many more infected, and with space exploration for livable planets still progressing, there is no escape from the madness. For many of those fortunate to have work during this era of record unemployment, working remotely has led to blurred boundaries and burning the candle at both ends. In the beginning of the new work-at-home reality, workers felt the need to be seen and heard more, albeit virtually, in order to prove their value, especially if remote work was not the norm in their organization.

Ahimsa — the act of being respectful toward all living things and the avoidance of violence toward others, whether by thoughts, words, or deeds. It is a belief that is practiced in many religions. We cannot change what happens to us, but we can choose what we can do next. To link these two statements successfully requires the key of self-awareness.

When tough luck strikes, self-awareness unlocks the understanding of our situation, by recognizing the behaviors that arise from that challenge and its consequence. If self-awareness is not present, the consequences of a person’s life can be disastrous; however, if a person is leading a destructive life, it is not necessarily the end. Tough luck does not have to win.
